2 Peter 1

Made Simple — Modern English Translation

Close to the original. Clear modern English.
1

This is Simon Peter, servant and messenger of Jesus Christ, writing to all of you who've been given the same incredible faith we have, a gift that came through God's perfect goodness and our Savior Jesus Christ.

⚡ THE BOTTOM LINE: We all got the same amazing faith as a gift through Jesus.

2

I'm praying that grace and peace just keep multiplying in your life as you get to know God and Jesus better.

⚡ THE BOTTOM LINE: The more you know God, the more peace and grace you'll experience.

3

God's incredible power has already given us everything we need to live well and live right. It all comes through really knowing him, the one who called us to share in his glory and goodness.

⚡ THE BOTTOM LINE: You already have everything you need for a good life because you know God.

4

Through these promises, God has given us something absolutely incredible and precious: the chance to actually share in his divine nature. This happens as we escape the broken, corrupted way the world operates when it's driven by selfish desires and cravings.

⚡ THE BOTTOM LINE: God's promises don't just change your circumstances, they change your actual nature.

5

And here's the thing, put your whole heart into this. Start with your faith, then build on top of it with good character. Once you've got that down, keep adding knowledge to the mix.

⚡ THE BOTTOM LINE: Faith is just the foundation, you've got to keep building on it with character and wisdom.

6

Add self-control to what you know, then add patience to your self-control, and then add godliness to your patience.

⚡ THE BOTTOM LINE: It's not just about knowing the right thing, it's about having the discipline, patience, and heart to actually live it out.

7

Add genuine care for others to your godly living, and then take that care even further, love people with the kind of selfless love that doesn't expect anything back.

⚡ THE BOTTOM LINE: Level up from being kind to your friends to actually loving everyone like family.

8

When these qualities are growing strong in your life, they keep you from being stuck or empty-handed in your relationship with Jesus. You'll actually have something to show for knowing him.

⚡ THE BOTTOM LINE: The right qualities growing in you = a relationship with Jesus that actually produces something beautiful.

9

But if you don't have these qualities, you're basically walking around blind. You can't see the bigger picture of where you're headed, and you've completely forgotten that you were already cleaned from all your past mistakes.

⚡ THE BOTTOM LINE: Without growing spiritually, you lose sight of both your future potential and how far you've already come.

10

So here's the thing, work hard to make sure you're really living out what God called you to do. When you actually put in that effort and follow through, you won't stumble and fall.

⚡ THE BOTTOM LINE: Put in the work to live your purpose, and you'll stay on your feet.

11

When you live like this, you'll get the most amazing welcome into Jesus' eternal kingdom, like getting VIP access that lasts forever.

⚡ THE BOTTOM LINE: Live right, and Jesus rolls out the red carpet to his forever kingdom.

12

That's why I'm never going to stop reminding you about these things, even though you already know them and you're solid in what you believe right now.

⚡ THE BOTTOM LINE: Some truths are worth hearing over and over again, even when you think you've got them down.

13

Yeah, I think it's right that as long as I'm still living in this body, I should keep reminding you of these things to keep you motivated and focused.

⚡ THE BOTTOM LINE: Sometimes we all need that friend who keeps us on track, Peter's being that friend.

14

I know my time here is running short, I'll be leaving this body behind soon, just like Jesus showed me it would happen.

⚡ THE BOTTOM LINE: Sometimes we know when our chapter is ending, and that's okay.

15

I'm going to make sure that even after I'm gone, you'll always be able to remember these truths I've shared with you.

⚡ THE BOTTOM LINE: Good teachers make sure their lessons outlive them.

16

Look, we're not telling you some made-up stories or clever fairy tales about Jesus and his power. We literally saw his greatness with our own eyes, we were actually there.

⚡ THE BOTTOM LINE: This isn't secondhand gossip, we saw Jesus's power firsthand and we're telling you exactly what happened.

17

Jesus received incredible honor and glory from God the Father when this amazing voice spoke from heaven's glory, saying 'This is my beloved Son, and I'm so proud of him.'

⚡ THE BOTTOM LINE: God literally spoke from heaven to tell everyone how proud he was of Jesus.

18

We actually heard this voice from heaven ourselves when we were up on that sacred mountain with him.

⚡ THE BOTTOM LINE: Peter's like 'I was literally there when God spoke from heaven, this isn't secondhand info.'

19

We've got something even more solid than what we witnessed, God's prophetic word. You're smart to pay attention to it, like following a light that cuts through the darkness, until the morning breaks and the sun rises in your hearts.

⚡ THE BOTTOM LINE: God's word is your flashlight in the dark until his light fully dawns inside you.

20

Here's something super important to understand: when it comes to prophecy in scripture, it's not about what you personally think it means or your own take on it.

⚡ THE BOTTOM LINE: Scripture isn't a choose-your-own-adventure book, prophecy has real meaning beyond our personal opinions.

21

These prophecies didn't just come from people making stuff up back in the day. Holy people spoke God's words because the Holy Spirit was moving through them and guiding what they said.

⚡ THE BOTTOM LINE: Scripture isn't just human thoughts, it's God speaking through people who were led by his Spirit.
